It is said that "Lakshi" in Hindu scriptures is the goddess of wealth and the word "prasad" literally means a huge palace or palace. It is believed that there was a big temple or palace of Goddess Lakshmi at the foot of the hill. Which has been dissolved in the abyss over time. Others believe that once upon a time a person named Lakshi Babu was the owner of vast wealth. Many believe that the name Lakshi Prasad may have come from the idea that he had a huge and beautiful palace. As a result of the evolution of time, the word Prasad has become popular or due to good reason. The literal meaning of the word "Prasad" means "offering" offered for the sake of the deity.

In ancient times, the greater Sylhet was part of the Gaudiya Harikela kingdom, so it is said that during the reign of the then Hindu kings, the villages in the area were named after the names of various gods and goddesses of the Hindu scriptures. For example, Kalagar, Lakshi Prasad. Krishnapur, Bishnupur, Devpur etc. Subsequently, after the abolition of Rajyasha and zamindari rule, the village of Lakshiprasad was famous for education, tradition and communication, and a pargana called Lakshiprasad was found. Panchayat system of governance existed in the parganas. It is said that the name Lakshi Prasad came in this way. Although the village is currently on the way to disappear due to geological reasons, the name Lakshi Prasad still shines in the minds of people. Later, due to the decentralization of power, a union named Lakshi Prasad of Kanighat police station under Sylhet sub-division emerged. Lakshiprasad village is located in the middle of the union. Coming down from the foothills of the hills of the state of Meghalaya, India, the village is full of unique natural beauty, Surighat Bazar adjacent to Haor in the west, Nunchara in the north, Nungang, Lovandi in the east and Trimohnaya village in the south of the Surma river. As a result the importance of the place to the people was immense but the size of the union was relatively large. It was decided to divide the union into another new union considering the benefit of the people. But disagreements arose among the people over the location and naming of the new union.

The name Mumtazganj came up for the new union. Mamtajganj is a part of Lakshi Prasad Union and is located on the bank of Surma River, bordering the union in the east. As a result, the dispute over the place was resolved considering the convenience of transportation of goods. Disagreement over the place is over, but parties and opponents are created over the naming. One side was in favor of naming Mamtajganj, the other side was in favor of naming Lakshiprasad East and West. When the problem became evident, finally after considering the opinions of both sides, Lakshi Prasad gave a verdict in favor of naming 2 unions named East and West, keeping the place Mamtajganj. Both sides accepted the decision without any objection. As a result, the new union was named No. 1 Lakshiprasad East and the former union was named No. 2 Lakshiprasad West.
